We have an exciting opportunity at General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) in our engineering organization for a Radio Frequency (RF) design engineer located in Huntsville, AL. This position will be part of the Avionics and RF Engineering Group and will support various satellite and weapon system programs through requirement developments, preliminary and detailed design, testing of RF subsystems and components, integration activities, and proposal development.

It is possible this position could be a remote position working out of our San Diego, CA/Englewood, CO/Fredericksburg, VA/Albuquerque, NM locations.


  • Provide RF design and analysis technical expertise in support of multiple space and weapon system programs and Internal Research and Development (IRAD) projects.
  • Conduct RF performance analyses including latency and throughput budgets, antenna patterns, radar cross-sections, and link margins.
  • Support systems engineering to define requirements, perform functional decomposition, develop system architecture designs, manage risks, and verify requirements for RF subsystems and components.
  • Support design and analysis of space rated electronics and communications subsystems.
  • Assess proposed requirements changes and how they affect RF subsystem and component designs including impacts to performance, risk, cost, verification/testing methodology, and delivery schedule.
  • Support design, development, and testing of ad hoc networks for vehicle-to-vehicle communications.
  • Provide real-time, thorough communication with program management.
  • Completed design and testing of electronics for Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility (EMI/EMC)
  • Perform programming and testing of software defined radios for various space-based and air vehicle applications
  • Support RF seeker design, analysis, and testing.
  • Collaborate daily with systems engineering, electronics, software, mechanical, logistics, test, quality assurance, and procurement personnel within GA and government customer agencies
  • Provide design documentation, write technical reports, and make technical presentations as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

    Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, seven or more years of experience with a master’s degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of RF engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Working knowledge of RF simulation and modeling tools, schematic capture tools, and printed circuit board layout tools.
  • Experience in analog, digital, mixed-signal, and RF circuit design and analysis.
  • Experience with various lab test hardware including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and network analyzers.
  • Designing and testing RF hardware in the VHF through Ka bands.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • For the ideal candidate this position comes with growth opportunity to lead a small team of RF engineers within the Avionics group, which requires strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas.
  • Must have experience with C or other programming languages.
  • Experience with Radar Cross-Section analysis tools such as XPATCH is desired.
  • Experience with 3D electromagnetic simulation software such as FEKO is desired.
  • Experience with software defined radios (SDR) is desired.
  • Experience with low probability of detection/low probability of intercept waveforms and weapon system data links is highly desired.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance is desired. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
