Head of Electrical Engineering

Employment Type

: Full-Time

: Engineering

Brief: Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), an MIT spinout pursuing the fastest, surest way to clean, limitless fusion energy, is looking for an electrical engineering leader with significant experience in leading teams through the design, construction, and commissioning of pulsed (~10 s), high-power (>100 MW) systems.

CFS’ mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We’ve created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who:

  • are mission-driven and treat people well;
  • improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems;
  • have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits; and
  • have skillsets and experience that relate to the following role:

Head of Electrical Engineering

The SPARC tokamak will have an impressive power system, needing ~300 MW for ~10 s to charge the inductive loads of its superconducting magnets at a few kV and 10’s of kA as well as a ~50 MW RF power system at ~100 MHz to heat the plasma. The SPARC site will also have a variety of other systems (e.g., cryoplant) requiring careful attention to power needs. The Head of Electrical Engineering will:

  • work within a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers as part of collaborative sponsored research projects at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center;
  • lead the engineering design team of electrical systems for the SPARC tokamak, including the utility switchyard, pulsed power, magnet power, RF power, and general site utility power;
  • ensure the design is compliant with the Code of Record and established system requirements;
  • maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems; and
  • report on and be accountable for project progress to the head of SPARC design as well as have regular engagement with others in senior management.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • led a small team of skilled, engineers through at least one design, build, and commissioning cycle of at least one large, high-reliability power system;
  • experience with a system similar to at least one of the following:
  • ~1 kV, ~10 kA, ~10 s pulsed power system (e.g., thyristor rectifiers used as power supplies for smelters, electromagnets, electrochemical processing, traction, etc.) and/or
  • ~1 MW VHR RF system;
  • strong leadership abilities, experience building teams, and a talent for inspiring collaboration and execution;
  • an exceptional safety record and attention to detail;
  • familiarity in applying IEEE standards to design solutions;
  • at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., electrical, power);
  • an ability to clearly express and critique ideas;
  • an emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity;
  • a drive towards commercially viable solutions;
  • a history of thriving in fast-paced, dynamic environments; and
  • values that align with our company’s values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique.

If you share our mission and believe you are a good fit for this position, please send a cover letter and resume to jobs@cfs.energy, with “Head of Electrical Engineering” in the subject line.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice.
