Battelle is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer with experience conducting and overseeing airport pavement research and development projects to support the FAA Airport Technology Research and Development (ATRD) program located at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC) in Atlantic City, N.J. 

The ATRD Branch conducts research and development for enhancing the safety, capacity, and efficiency of airports located throughout the nation. The Pavement Section conducts research in multiple task areas that focus on airport pavement research and development supporting the FAA’s National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF), the National Airport Pavement Materials Research Center (NAPMRC) and airfield pavement field research sites through the nation. 

  • This candidate will work with engineers (civil, electrical, and mechanical), technicians, materials lab personnel and subcontractors to support research activities.
  • Will assist in managing the construction of destructive and non-destructive test areas within the NAPTF and NAPMRC. Provide quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) oversight and documentation of all contract related construction activities.
  • Participate in the development of construction and instrumentation plans and drawings. Review plans and updates to ensure designs conform to applicable FAA Advisory Circular guidelines, test objectives, and customer expectations.
  • Coordinate with technicians, instrumentation and data collection specialists, non-destructive testing (NDT) engineers and advanced degreed engineers to plan and implement accelerated traffic testing activities and pavement condition evaluations.
  • Work with instrumentation and materials testing personnel to plan and execute sensor installation and materials sampling/testing projects at airfield pavement field research sites.
  • Assist with the preparation of task plans, project schedules, construction history reports, standard operating procedures and other contract deliverable documents.
  • Must have a 4-year civil engineering degree from an accredited college or university with at least eight years of work experience in airport pavement design and related areas, at least 2 years of which shall be in planning and implementing projects on airport pavements; or an advanced degree in civil engineering (MS or Ph.D.) from an accredited college or university, with a specialization related to airport pavement design or materials, with at least five years of work experience in airport pavement design and related areas, at least 2 years of which shall be in planning and implementing projects on airport pavements.
  • Must be a strong and effective communicator, both written and verbal, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to present clear and concise information to targeted audiences that may or not be familiar with the topic at hand.
  • Must be a United States Person or Permanent Resident with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
